Join the local cycling community and the Municipality of Bologna at Velostazione ex-Dynamo—Italy’s first "bike station," now completely renovated—for an afternoon of discussion and exchange, followed by due alternative guided group rides through the streets of Bologna. The technical visit begins with an exploration of the Velostazione project, providing a quick overview of how this hub integrates into the city's mobility and cultural strategy, alongside a tour of its architecture and WWII underground shelters. For those arriving early, the Ex-Dynamo’s vegetarian/vegan bistro is a great spot for an independent lunch before we start. Following the institutional greetings, we will hold a technical session focused on Bologna's mobility transition, specifically the “Bologna City 30” speed reduction project and the latest cycling developments. We aim to maintain an open format to facilitate the exchange of best practices and challenges, concluding the presentations with an interactive Q&A. Participants will then split into two groups for the site visits. Each route offers a distinct perspective on the city's evolution, focusing either on historical heritage or on urban regeneration and nature. To ensure a safe and engaging experience, each group is limited to 15 participants. Groups will be formed on-site; while we will do our best to accommodate preferences, both routes are designed to be equally insightful, showcasing recent cycling infrastructure, "school squares," and the ongoing tramway works.
Monday, 15 June, 14:30 - Starting point: Velostazione ex-Dynamo, Via dell’Indipendenza 71/Z, 40126 Bologna (BO) (estimated duration 4h)
The tours are led by architects and urban planners from the Municipality of Bologna, providing professional insights and technical commentary throughout the journey.

Route 1: Porticoes and Cycle Lanes - This route heads toward Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, crossing the recently pedestrianized Via Indipendenza, a key site for the new tramway works. From there, the group will head southwest past the Basilica of San Francesco—a stunning example of Italian Gothic architecture—to observe a recent contraflow bike lane implementation. The tour continues alongside the UNESCO-listed Porticoes of Via Saragozza toward Via Perti, where the municipality has created a new "school square" to prioritize pedestrian safety. After a glimpse of the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara and the ancient Reno Canal, the itinerary concludes via the "Tangenziale delle Biciclette", a dedicated circular cycle path following the city’s historic ring road.
Route 2: Canals and Urban Regeneration - The second route follows the Navile Canal, the historic waterway that once allowed locally produced silk to reach Venetian merchants. Once an industrial powerhouse, the Navile has been rediscovered as a "green lung"; its naturalistic bike path now connects the Main Station to the northern districts, with former factories successfully repurposed as university halls and museums. After leaving the canal, the tour explores the dynamic Bolognina neighborhood, where early 20th-century architecture meets modern urban development. Participants will stop at Piazza Lucio Dalla, a bustling covered pedestrian square, and the "school square" of Via Di Vincenzo, before returning through the tramway construction sites currently reshaping Bologna’s mobility landscape.

Enjoy a fantastic ride along the Sun Cycle Route (EuroVelo 7), which crosses the Apennines and offers breathtaking views. In just a few hours, we will experience a 20-kilometer stretch of the vast 7,400 km network connecting Malta to the North Cape. This is possible because the section from Bologna to Florence runs alongside the railway line, providing the flexibility to start or stop at any point depending on your schedule. We will ride through a recently completed portion of the Sun Cycle Route within the Metropolitan City of Bologna. As this section was finished very recently, official signage and logos may not yet be fully installed. The path features a mix of asphalt on shared-use roads and firm earth in more natural settings. While the route is of medium difficulty, the electric bikes provided make even the steeper sections (with gradients over 10%) easily manageable for less experienced riders. The Metropolitan Councilor with responsibility for Bicipolitana, the Metropolitan Railway Service and Road Safety Simona Larghetti will join us for the ride.
NOTE: Registration will be open until June 5th to ensure we can prepare your experience in the best possible way.
Saturday, 20 June, 8:00 - Starting point: Bologna main train station, West Platforms (Piazzale Ovest) (estimated duration 6h)
