Cities like Ghent lead the way in creating cycling-friendly environments. We actively invest in cycling infrastructure, provide space for cyclists, and take various measures to encourage cycling. The results are clear: the number of cyclists in Ghent is growing every year, making our city a more pleasant place to live.
Mathias De Clercq (42) has been the mayor of the city of Ghent since 2019. Before that, he was an alderman in Ghent for 12 years and served in both the Federal and Flemish parliaments. He is also the chairman of 'Gentspoort', a large-scale urban renewal project that will not only provide 10 kilometers of additional tram lines in Ghent but also tunnels under various traffic junctions, giving more space to pedestrians and cyclists. He was the first mayor to bring his kids to school with a cargo bike.
