Built to Inspire. Designing Beautiful Urban Environments
Historic city centres present unique challenges—and opportunities—for advancing active mobility. This session explores how cities are rebalancing space, heritage, and accessibility to prioritise people over cars in the heart of their urban area. From Paris’s rapid transformation into a cycling city, to Vienna’s reimagining of the iconic Ringstraße, and Hamburg-Ottensen’s redistribution of street space within a protected historic neighbourhood, these cases highlight how change can be achieved within complex urban fabrics. The experience of Rimini adds a visionary perspective on integrating active mobility into historic centres while respecting architectural identity and cultural heritage. Together, these examples demonstrate how thoughtful design, policy, and community engagement can unlock safer, more liveable, and vibrant historic centres shaped around walking and cycling.
