PLENARY 3: Cycling strategies - Joining national and international forces
19 Jun 2024 09:00 - 10:15 ‘T KUIPKE (Purple room) Panel discussion
The UN Paris Agreement in 2015 and the European Green Deal aim to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Transport is the one sector where emissions have gone up by almost 30 % since 1990, showing the emergency to act while exposing the challenges ahead. We see national and international cycling resolutions, declarations and concrete strategies growing in importance as crucial policy tools for governments to define what is needed to grow the overall modal share of cycling. This will deliver important societal benefits including reduced transport emissions, better public health, greater equity and more liveable cities and towns. In this session we will talk to key stakeholders and hear from them how such strategies and other initiatives can be brought to the next level. A particular focus will be given to the recently published European Declaration on Cycling by the European Commission and the next steps.
