Built to Inspire. Designing Beautiful Urban Environments
How can street design create safer, healthier, and more inclusive neighbourhoods? This session explores practical approaches to rebalancing street space so that it better serves people of all ages and abilities. Speakers will share experiences from initiatives that redesign local streets to support safe, child-friendly environments and encourage everyday cycling. The discussion will compare two approaches to integrating cyclists with motorised traffic, highlighting the trade-offs and design choices cities face. Milan’s Strade Aperte programme demonstrates how reclaiming space for people can transform urban life, while experiences from Oslo show how temporary street changes can lead to lasting improvements. Together, these examples illustrate how fair street design can foster vibrant, liveable communities.
