Travel Reimagined. Advancing Sustainability & Tourism
Investing in cycling is not just good for health and the environment—it makes strong economic sense. This session explores the growing field of “bikenomics” and how cities and regions can better understand and quantify the financial returns of cycling. From the “show effect” of major events that inspire uptake, to new approaches for evaluating transport investments, speakers will highlight how cycling delivers value through increased retail activity, job creation, reduced healthcare costs, and more efficient infrastructure spending. Case studies also examine how high-quality infrastructure—such as better road surfaces—can directly influence cycling levels and economic outcomes, alongside Denmark’s comprehensive mapping of its cycling industry. Together, these insights provide a compelling evidence base for decision-makers to prioritise cycling as a smart, high-return investment in urban and regional economies.
