Bicycle parking is an indispensable part of cycling infrastructure. Without the opportunity to park safely and conveniently a bicycle at the end of the trip, the bicycle trip might not happen in the first place. To build high-quality bicycle parking facilities, certain criteria have to kept in mind in terms of quantity, quality, accessibility, etc. Bicycle parking facilities must also cater to the increasingly different user need. Bicycles come in very different shape and form, ranging from small children bicycles to cargo bikes. They need to be securely parked, weather-protected and perhaps charged. Through the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, minimum bicycle parking standards will be rolled out now throughout the EU. By May 2026, these European rules have to be translated into national law. The Velo-city in Rimini comes at a crucial moment to discuss these rules. ECF will present its ideas for minimum European quality bicycle parking standards. This presentation will be complemented by best practice examples from City representatives from Copenhagen and Ghent to demonstrate local implementation.
