Cycle with us

A record 1,600 attendees confirmed it once again: cycling is on the rise globally. "It is evolving from an alternative for the sporty into essential transportation for everyone," said keynote speaker Janette Sadik-Khan at the opening plenary of Velo-city 2024. Exemplary infrastructure and bold policies can now be found worldwide. We were thrilled to see these global initiatives converge in Ghent to inspire, gain strength and connect through cycling.

technical visits bike parade cyclists

"The bike parade with so many Ghentians gave me goosebumps."

- Bram Van Braeckevelt, Deputy Major of Ghent, Belgium

In true Velo-city style, thousands of cyclists flooded the streets of Ghent on the Wednesday evening. Both international Velo-citizens and locals rode together along the city's most scenic cycle lanes and bridges, enjoying music and live performances. The Bike Parade ended with a lively Après-fiets party in the city centre. Ghent had no problem catering for the thousands of people arriving by bike, as the Cycling Embassy of Ghent provided plenty of temporary bicycle parking spaces, even transforming a car parking into a bike parking!

More than just a conference

Technical Visits

Velo-citizens could choose from an impressive number of 19 expert-led technical visits showcasing Ghent's cycling development in small groups on a bike. The tours explored diverse topics such as managing school streets during peak hours, Ghent's famous circulation plan and the innovative use of data and technology.

Smart Pedal Pitch

In the fifth edition of the Smart Pedal Pitch competition, eight start-ups and SMEs presented their most innovative, market-ready cycle tech solutions to the Velo-city audience and a special jury. Congratulations to the winner Locky, the bicycle rack of the future, designed to eliminate bike theft and make cycling a no-brainer in the city.

Social and side events

The social and side events are an unmissable part of Velo-city. This year, we saw velodrome 't Kuipke turned into a dance floor for the Networking Dinner Party. Outside of the conference walls, the Velo-festival celebrated the local cycling culture, with 100 Ghentians marking the occasion by getting a bicycle tattoo!
